Özet: For many countries, groundwater is the primary source of drinking water. In Canada, nearly 30% of the population depends on groundwater for domestic needs. These groundwater sources are used in different proportions. In Quebec, less than half of the population uses groundwater, while almost the entire population of Prince Edward Island uses it. Canadian irrigation depends 75% on groundwater. Population growth, agriculture, and industry significantly affect the quality and quantity of this water. Recent scientific and technological developments have led to better approaches to resource exploitation, management, and protection, including: Three-dimensional mapping of geology (geophysics); Characterization of the heterogeneity of aquifers; Estimation of groundwater recharge; Quantification of interactions between surface water and groundwater; Understanding groundwater flow systems in aquatic ecosystems; Hydrogeological parameters of aquifers; Development of computer analysis models; Protection of groundwater; Groundwater monitoring program. These developments have improved the understanding of the hydrological processes and interactions that occur in groundwater systems for sustainable use while ensuring the protection of this vital natural resource for future generations. This presentation will discuss some of these developments and their roles in what I will call the renaissance of hydrogeology.

Konuşmacı Hakkında: Dr. Djaouida Chenaf is at Royal Military College of Canada and expert in the field of geosciences, soil and groundwater engineering. She holds a Civil Engineering degree (5 year program) (1988) from the University of Science and Technology Houari Boumédiène (Algiers, Algeria) where she graduated first of her graduating class (of 140 students). She also holds a Master of Applied Sciences in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Moncton, New Brunswick (1992) and a PhD in Hydrogeology (1997) from École Polytechnique de Montréal. She is a member in good standing of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec. Dr. Chenaf has a rich and multidisciplinary background, and is currently a full professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the Royal Military College (RMC) of Canada. She teaches various civil engineering disciplines and is very active in research, particularly in physical, numerical and analytical modelling of permeability tests of unconsolidated soils, underground flows in saturated and unsaturated environments. Pumping and recovery aquifer tests in complex stratigraphic configurations, analysis of the hydro mechanical behaviours of frozen and unfrozen soils, and application of multi-criteria analyses to groundwater flow problems, hydraulic and geotechnical structures. She is involved in the Canadian Geotechnical Society, the International Association of Hydrogeologists and the Transportation Research Board. She participates in executive committees and presents many technical conferences. She has published several scientific articles, is the recipient of numerous awards, and honours both in Canada and internationally. Throughout her career, both in Canada and internationally, Dr. Chenaf has led several technical studies and has carried out many highly complex hydrogeological and geotechnical projects that required high-level technical expertise. These studies include, but are not limited to, the rehabilitation of groundwater and contaminated sites, the control of groundwater and the stability of embankments on highly compressible soil foundations. She also designed and evaluated the behaviour of several runways. Dr. Chenaf’s involvement in geotechnical studies, drainage monitoring and hydrogeological studies that have led to the development of several reports and technical notes give her a reputation as a high-level expert constantly solicited by Canadian companies to provide advice and to collaborate on technical studies.
