Abstract: The need of ubiquitous, flawless distance-insensitive wireless connectivity that can provide wide service coverage and high-fidelity services for all the users, can be achieved by unique integration of terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) for next generation communication systems. This vision is also consistent with the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) activities as defined in TR 38.811. The integration of terrestrial and NTNs is also envisioned by the Vertical heterogeneous network (VHetNet) architecture which is a threelayer Vertical communication model consisting of satellites network, aerial network and terrestrial network within the context of Sixth Generation (6G) vision. In this talk, possible VHetNet architecture configurations which are equipped with laser transceivers will be presented. Furthermore, opportunities, challenges and interesting research problems will be discussed from the physical layer point of view.
About the Speaker: Eylem Erdogan received B.S. and M.S. degree from Işık University, Istanbul, Turkey and the Ph.D. degree from Kadir Has University, Istanbul, Turkey in 2014 all in electronics engineering. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Istanbul Medeniyet University. He was a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Electrical Engineering department, Lakehead University, Thunder Bay, ON, Canada from March 2015 to September 2016 and a visiting professor in Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada during summer 2019. His research interests are in the broad areas of wireless communications, including cooperative, relayaided, and multi-hop communication systems, optical wireless communications, cognitive radio networks, physical layer security, unmanned aerial vehicle communications and networks, and laser satellite communications. He is a Senior Member of IEEE.
